Enquiries about Results (EaR) Procedure

This procedure sets what a candidate can do if he/she has failed their examination and is not content that his/her examinations were marked accurately.

Stage 1
A candidate may request a clerical check to ensure the right mark has been awarded to the right candidate.

If you wish to request a clerical check on the written examination you must complete a request for a clerical check form and send it to PEB within 15 working days of the receipt of your examination result from the PEB. The request must be accompanied by the appropriate fee of:

  • £50 per examination for Foundation Certificate Examinations,
  • £100 for Final Diploma Examinations
  • £50 for the LSC Written Examination
  • £50 for the LSC Oral Examination and

The PEB will check, for any examination, that your answer script was fully marked, that all marks for each question or part question were correctly totalled and recorded against your details, and that this mark was awarded to you.

The outcome of the clerical check will be reported to you within 10 working days of the receipt of your request. If, as a result of this clerical check, your fail grade is deemed to have passed a full refund of the fees charged for this service will be made.

Stage 2
If a candidate remains dissatisfied following stage 1, he/she may request a review of the marking on the written examination or oral examination

If you wish to request a review of the marking of your examination you must complete a review of marking form (available on request from PEB) and send it to PEB within 5 working days of the receipt of the outcome of the clerical check. Each request must be accompanied by the appropriate fee of:

  •  £200 for the Foundation Certificate Examination
  •
  •  £300 for the Final Diploma Examination
  •
  •  £240 for the LSC Written Examination
  •
  •  £160 for the LSC Oral Examination and
  •
  •  £250 for the ICPA Examination.

A PEB examiner who has not been involved in the initial marking process will review the marking. The outcome of the marking review will be reported to you within 15 working days of receipt of their request.

If, as a result of this review of marking, your fail grade is deemed to have passed a full refund of the fees charged for this service will be made.

Stage 3
If a candidate remains dissatisfied following stage 2, he/she may request an Appeal.

If you wish to request an appeal you must complete a request for an appeal form (available on request from the PEB) within 5 working days of the receipt of the outcome of the marking review.
Each request must be accompanied by the appropriate fee of £500.

The PEB will commission an expert independent of the PEB and the candidate, who will be selected by the PEB. This review will judge whether all stages of the marking process and the EaR process have been followed correctly. It will not involve a further review of your work. The result of the independent person's investigation will be sent to you within 15 working days of their request.
Stage 3 is the last stage of this EaR process and any decision made at this stage is final.

If, as a result of this appeal, your fail grade is deemed to have passed a full refund of the fees charged for this service will be made.
