Role

We have a fantastic opportunity for a Patent Attorney to join our Intellectual Property team based in Hull, our Advanced Wound Management Global Headquarters. The focus of this role is the provision of advice, guidance and professional services to the R&D Management and Commercial Managers of the Company divisions for the cost-effective protection of the group’s Intellectual Property. 

Your role will involve dealing with caseload management and identifying and protecting the Company’s patentable inventions. Caseloads will be managed from initial conception to launch and regular dialogue with the R&D teams will be required, advising them on issues including potential risks relating to third-party rights, as well as our own product protection. There will be significant original drafting and prosecution, competitor search and analysis, strategic advice and product review undertaken.

In order to succeed in this role, you should enjoy working closely with the business, and have proven experience of providing sound commercial advice as well as guiding IP strategy. 

We are ideally looking for a qualified European / UK Patent Attorney, but would also consider a part-qualified European / UK Patent Attorney of finals standard. In addition, you’ll have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as outstanding patent drafting and prosecution experience. As Smith & Nephew is a diversified advanced medical technology business, we are interested in hearing from applicants from a range of technical backgrounds, especially those having generalist technical skills, and including those with relevant experience in digital/electronics subject-matter.
