The Informals is, as its name suggests, an informal association of the younger, unqualified members of the profession. There is no formal membership - all student members of CIPA automatically become part of the Informals. The Informals provide a UK-wide support network for trainees, organising lectures and tutorials directed towards the examinations, trips to the UKIPO and social events.
Student members of CIPA are encouraged to subscribe to the Informals' "Yellow Sheet" blog at http://yellowsheet.wordpress.com to be sure of being up-to-date with the latest information. The blog aims to provide information of interest to student members, such as social events, sporting fixtures, practical information relating to tutorials and the time-honoured 'Wacky Patent' feature. A paper Yellow Sheet newsletter is also distributed to students together with the CIPA Journal each month.
The Informals also have a Twitter account and a Facebook page:

Promoting the IP professions abroad
A group consisting of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys, Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys, The Law Society of England and Wales, FICPI-UK and the Intellectual Property Lawyers' Association meet regularly to discuss how best to promote the UKs IP professionals and IP system. The group have produced a brochure on why you should choose the UK for the protection, exploitation and enforcement of IP.
